Re: why is so hard to find a cab for driver

My friend, I think you have come in a busy time. But for sure it is not the case all the year.
It is hard to find cabs for lease for two major reasons:

  1. It is the period from October to Christmas, which is a busy time for cabbies and probably the best time to make money. Therefore, most of cabbies do prefer to take a summer vacation then back to work at this period of time.
  2. The slow down of economy, I think more drivers are coming to this job because either they lost their jobs or they need extra money to cover their expenses.

Usually after Christmas you see more Garages looking for drivers, but you never know how the market goes at this time.

I think you just have to keep looking, just avoid Garages that are closer to Manhattan; maybe Bronx, Queens, and Brooklyn are your best options.
Regarding Tip, I think you should tip only after getting a good service !

Good Luck

Re: why is so hard to find a cab for driver

Busy season is now. Slower season is After January. Slowest is in the summer. The other thing is that as a new driver, it will be hard to come onto a private medallion's insurance, since most of the time you need 2-3 years experience.

Only give the tip when you get the car. But you need to tip going out and coming in. I usually tipped 1% of my net, so it was often over the chincy $1 that most other drivers give. Not giving a tip will ensure that if it is a toss up between you and someone who tips, they will get the car.

Re: why is so hard to find a cab for driver
The reason it is so hard for any driver to get a taxi today is because there are only a fixed number of medallions for taxis (roughly about 12400)The TLC and the city don't care about the actual number of licensees. As long as the TLC, the city, the company that does the drug testing and the schools that teach continue to generate record revenue for themselves and the city, the TLC will issue as many licenses as they can.Yet another way they could care less about the quality of the driver and the public they serve.

Fall is hard time to find work. Most cabbies are busy tryin to make money for holidays and garages are very tight for new hires.Leasing might be the best way to go.
