Ripped Off
I am a new driver and have gotten ripped off by passengers several times in the past year. Is there anything I should be looking out for? How can I protect myself. Mostly it is passengers not paying. No violence involved. It is very frustrating and I feel robbed. Suggestions and advice are appreciated.

Re: Ripped Off
My advice is , If fare is less than $20.00. Just forget it . Its not worth it to call the police or fighting with a scum bag for so little. and you know its not gonna happen everyday. part of business bro part of business.

Re: Ripped Off
I disagree. Just recently that happened to me and I always secure a piece of ID from the passenger. She never came back so the next day during a slow hour I went to the precint and reported it. They made a copy of her ID and gave it back to me. You have to go in assertively and say you want to file a complaint for "Theft of Services". Warrants are actually issued if you have the person's ID. If anything it will screw these scammers in the future and maybe they'll think twice.

Re: Ripped Off
I had ripped off two times in a different manner: The first time: My lady customer asked me if she can use my phone, because I’m a nice cabby I said ok. She took my phone and start dialing. She returned it back without talking at all. At the end of the month, when I saw my bill, I found out she dialed two times to 411 number and another third number: The cost $ 6 same as her fare was!!!
The second time: This lady was flying to Texas; she forgot her phone on my cab. She contacted me and gave me her address to ship it. It cost me $30 to ship it overnight: Never get it back. So be careful out there

Cabbie, Thank you for sharing your (2) two misfortunate experiences. We can all learn from this. Thanks.

Thank you for your responses. Is there a profile that any of you have noticed on the type of passenger who does this type of things? Any other stories or lessons learned? It would be greatly appreciated....

Re: Ripped Off
I've had many customers ask to use my phone. I always very politely tell them NO. It's not rude to say NO. I have this thing about letting other people use my phone...germs and all

Re: Ripped Off
Most times it is not worth it, but if you know they are trying to get over on you, then find a way to get the money. I had a woman take me from JFK to Bushwick, and complained about the $30 fare. She got out, I pulled over, and followed her around until the police came. She quickly came up with the money. I could have let her go, because that part of Bushwick was particularily nasty, as was she. But she was just trying to get over, so screw her. She had to pay or go to jail. Period. You gotta maintain your self-respect.
