New york yellow Taxi drivers: GPS or NO GPS STRIKE or NO STRIKE

On Tuesday March 6th New York Taxi Workers Alliance called for a DEMONSTRATION TO STOP GPS. NYTWA stated that:

“GPS is computer software which will be attached to the taxi meter and track the taxi. GPS will automatically tell the TLC where you were at what time how many fares/trips per shift when you’re off-duty and how much money you’ve made. TLC’s GPS in taxis will NOT be able to navigate/give directions. A monitor with a control switch will be installed in the back seat playing ads for the customer. If the passenger vandalizes the monitor you will get the ticket. If the GPS breaks down your meter will be shut OFF”

On the other hand New York State Federation of TAXI Drivers Inc (NYSFTD) HAD CALLED OFF THE STRIKE. According to NYSFTD GPS will bring New York taxi drivers:

  • Corporate users
  • Advertising money
  • Bigger tips
  • Out of town rides
  • Security in case of emergency
  • Provides safer workplace
  • Gives passengers the opportunity to visit theaters museums and Restaurants.

We know that GPS is already approved by TLC in more than 2 years and it is already installed in many cabs but what we don’t know is how will this affect the yellow cab driver!!

This is but an attempt to sell an electronic device (GPS) in bulk and its also convenient for fleet/garage operators in order to track all the faulty drivers that may give them problems. And there could be even more problems with the credit card business. Passangers can use stolen cards to pay the fare or they may even cancel the payment afterwards so the driver may loose the fare etc. And on the other hand some stealthy drivers may also overcharge the credit cards so it's all a bunch of unnecessary crap. The taxi fares are so minimal everyone should have that much cash in there pocket plus the convenience of the ATM makes it even more easy to get cash. So the GPS is rediculous here it's as though we're going around the nation or the world or something. But in fact we're only driving around the City within a 15-mile radious. And if you must have a GPS then join the navy!

GPS in NYC cab.
Does help your business or just troubled expensive device? I think taking credit cards is OK, but the TV should be removed!
