Meaning of the small letter that follows the medallion number on a license plate
Can anyone tell me what the small letter that follows the medallion number on a NYC yellow cab's license plate means? Why is it significant? If it is important, why is it not part of the medallion number? Thanks!

All it means is that the original license plate has been lost, stolen or destroyed and the Motor Vehicle Dept. has replaced the original. First replacement gets the extra A. If its replaced again, then it gets a B and so on.
