Re: When you find yourself standing under the rain for half an hour and there are no yellow cabs available, you can thank NYPD for that!
I do not drive a cab, but you are making good money right? so stick with it and wait to see if you really like it or not.

Re: When you find yourself standing under the rain...

My friend oleg, getting tickets is just a part of the job of been a new York city yellow cab driver. If every body has to get a ticket and quit the job, you won't see any yellow cab driver in Manhattan. So what you can do is: FIGHT BACK YOUR TICKETS WITH A LAWYER.

There are some places in Manhattan you shouldn’t even think of stopping, picking up, or dropping of a passenger. The most dangerous one is the one you got tickets in. Don’t ever think of dropping, picking up, or stopping between 33rd and 34 ST going doing 7th Ave (West side), it is a bus stop and police always giving tickets over there.

Other major places yellow cabbies should avoid:

  • In front of Penn station: DON’T DOUBLE PARK even if you are dropping of a passenger. If the right hand side is full with cabs and you have to drop of your passenger in front of Penn station, please cross 32 ST therefore avoiding the pick up area and pull up on the right side.
  • Don’t drive on bus lanes. Hot spots on getting tickets are 5th Ave and Broadway bellow Houston.
  • Don’t stop, pick up, or drop of a passenger on Lexington Ave (West side) at 45 ST where the sign NO STOPPING is.
  • Don’t stop, pick up, or drop of a passenger bellow 42 ST on Lexington (West side) where the sign NO STOPPING is.
  • Respect signs, hot spots to avoid tickets are:
    • Before 10 AM if you are going down 2nd Ave don’t turn right on 37 ST
    • Before 10 AM, if you are crossing from east to west from 1st AVE on 37 ST, YOU MUST TURN LEFT ON 2ND AVE

I wish these tips are helpful especially for new drivers, wish you happy driving without tickets

Moderator thank you for your support.I wish there were more cab drivers like you.

Now as I understand the only allowed by TLC law, way to pick up a fare is to pull up to a curb not further then 12 inches, so please tell me how is it possible to do it in real life? I find that most of the fares I pick up are usually standing on the roadway or on the crosswalk, because the curbside is most of the times taken by trucks, cars or something else, so every time that I pick a passenger up I'm risking to get a ticket. Is it a normal condition to work, is it something that under a control of a cabbie? I bet it's not, City don't have a normal system like in major European cities, where they have stands and passengers are being picked up only at those stands, but in NYC you must cruise the streets and pick up any one who hails you or you are risking a refusal fine of $350 and when you stop to pick up you getting a ticket for being to far from the curb or what ever. Is it f@cking normal way to work? You guys had a little two day strike back in September in which half of you were still working this is a shame really, if it was up to me I would strike till the City official change this stupid working conditions for us and we would have a better life.
