Nissan/Ford NYC cab - anybody test drive them?

Just wondering did any REAL taxi drivers get to test drive and evaluate the proposed new NYC Nissan /Ford/Karsan yellow cabs?.How well will they survive NYC ?

As a taxi driver here in Europe we get to choose whatever make/model we think will survive use in our area of operation ( except London's Black cabs ) but I'd be very surprised ( or not ! ) if the contenders for the NYC cab weren't evaluated like the Michigan police evaluate patrol cars .

Ford Transit Connect and Nissan NV200 are sold in diesel form in Europe, but the VW Eurovan ($31k in Mexico) would be the favourite MPV taxi in Europe. the Karsan company produce a 45 year old design so I don't know how they thought they could outdo Ford and Nissan !

The last people the NYC Taxi & Limousine Commission would consult about any changes affecting drivers would be the drivers.  They seem to have settled on the Nissan  NV200.  The NV200 is not a model Nissan has sold previously in the states so we don't have a clue, only pictures!  And Nissan will be modifying it for the NYC taxi so it is anyone's guess what we will end up with.

Most who I have talked to were hoping they would go with Ford.  Ford was also offering a model that does not exist yet but at least Ford has a proven track record with the NYC taxi, the Crown Victoria and the Escape can take the beating they get on our lumpy streets.

why nissan /of course they have chosen a real car  .this car has been put into crush test and passed .
wich means the insurance liability is gonna cost less for the city and save money and lives
,it  will do lot of work with its lage space from deliveries to wheel chair  ,airoport services .and more.it has four
sylinders to save gas and will be good for Taxi Tour for tourists who want to see around nyc .and take nice picture with its sun roof.
this kind of cars put less stress on drivers .the trunk can fit up to 10 lagages so what yu nee more .

It does look big and comfortable on the inside but I don't know about those little wheels and low front end.  We have pot holes like moon craters here and they can't always be avoided.  I predict lots of front end damage, once saw a Crown Victoria go into a hole so big that the front was sitting on the chassis with the wheels just dangling in the hole.  the Crown Vic is a powerful car but he could not back out of that mess1

Yep, FWD (Front Wheel Drive ) cars damage drive-shafts in potholes - NYC may have moon craters but we have Boreens (little-roads) in Ireland. The councils never fill the potholes, thats why the culchies ( country-people) drive 4WD's with off road tyres.

Still, when we do hit a pothole, we just take a photo of it and the damage, send it to the council with the repair bill and get paid !
