Re: request for information
Your drivers license must be 6 months old before you can apply for a tlc license. You need a tlc license for black taxi as well. It was a surprise for me too, I ended up working in fast food for those 6 months.

Re: request for information
If you are saying that your NJ license is older than six months, you should be able to apply. If you don't have any license over six months you must wait. You should contact a taxi school, they will answer all of your questions and determine your eligibility for a hack. http://www.nycitycab.online/Services/TaxiSchools.aspx

Re: request for information
It will take about a month if you are well prepared. A few weeks of taxi school and a few weeks of waiting for the license. Don't expect to get rich though, unless you manage to get a full-time night shift, which is tough for a new guy. On an average day shift I only made about 120 a day after expenses, on a good day 160, on a bad day 90. Now that I managed to get night shift, I make 160 on an average night and 250+ on Friday and Saturday.

Re: request for information
Just go to the closest taxi school, it makes no difference. While you wait, you should go to a taxi school and buy a map and workbook to practice for the test. Also, sit through the six hour defensive driving course, it is available at most driving schools, you will need the certificate to start your application. You will need your actual (non-copy) social security card with your exact name on it. The whole process will cost $500+. When you get your license and go to a garage, make sure you bribe the dispatchers liberally, $5-$10 for each day shift worked for me, just quickly slip the cash over the counter after you get the key, if you make good friends with a dispatchers you should be able to get a steady schedule. If you start in the summer it will probably be easy to get a car because business is very slow, you won't make much money, but since all of the veteran drivers will be on vacation it will give you a chance to break into the business easily, the garages don't like giving under 25's cars, but they will in the summer when they are desperate for business. Also, don't make the mistake of starting without a GPS, you can get a decent one for about $100, it will save you a lot of stress.
