FInes for working a double shift
Rumor has it,that the TLC will be fining cabbies who have worked more than a 12 shift, $100 PER HOUR (Yes thats one hundred per hour) over the 12 since GPS was installed.
There must be plenty of cabbies who have worked an additional hour or so just because of circumstances and that alone can add up to a large fine.
Medallion owners who are the only drivers, must have had days when they went over too.
Anyone else heard about this?

Re: FInes for working a double shift
I have recently begun working 15 hour shifts regularly and I know many drivers who work double shifts, I downloaded the list of active TLC summonses at http://www.nyc.gov/html/tlc/html/licenses/open_summons_list.shtml and not a single one is 54-14(D). I think the TLC is lax in enforcing this rule. Just to be on the safe side, does anyone logout of the GPS after 12?

Re: FInes for working a double shift
This is a good law that hits where it matters most - your pocket. If $100 cannot deter you what else could? Many people do not realize that working beyond 12 hours is a health  hazard nor do they recognize that it a risk for the travelling public. No amount of money is valued over your health,I welcome it. Work 12 hrs. rest your body, mind and resume the next 12 hours. We should embrace it. It's long over due.

Re: FInes for working a double shift

This is a complete lie. TLC cannot charge anybody $100.00 per each hour over 12 hours. To do this TLC will first need to ammend the current rule 2.23(a) of the old rule book. According to this rule, in its current form, in both the old and new rule book, the fine is $25 with 1 point and no personal appearance regardless of how many hours you go over the 12 hour limit. Just check the TLC rule book yourself. In the old rule book the rule is # 2.23 and this is the same or is not changed in the new rule book. So the fine is only $25 same for 13 hours as well as for 24 hours.

Re: FInes for working a double shift

ok rogger ,let's say $25 and 1 point every time you go over 12H. if you do that every day, meaning ($25 and 1 pt)  time 7.

it is 7 points and $175 a week. it's not worthed taking chance

Re: FInes for working a double shift
A lot of RUMORS have been going around about this rule.
This is what the rule ACTUALLY means.

According to the TLC, cab drivers cannot work more than 12 CONSECUTIVE hours.
Consecutive means back to back, with NO BREAKS in between.

Want to know how to work more than 12 hours without the TLC bothering you?
Simple. Take breaks!

Go to "Off Duty" on the meter and pick one of the many options they give you for going off duty. You can go off duty for personal use, temporary break, taximeter problem, going home, and more that I am probably forgetting. All you have to do is go off duty for 1 second and you can work for another 12 hours.

To make sure you actually went off duty, check the meter to see if a "Off Duty" receipt came out.
If it did, then according to the TLC you are not working. If you want to be extra careful, save the off duty receipt.
To start working again, push the "On Duty" button, enter your hack number and pin and start working!

If you don't believe me, call the TLC and ask them yourself. The TLC doesn't want you to be "On Duty" for more than 12 straight hours, they want you to at least take a break sometime.
