business discussion
Hello everyone

I would like to ask you guys what makes me stress everyday whether you guys have the same thing or no?I'm a day driver and these are what I meet everyday

1- I know some guys make double shift some days, but why these guys do use off duty light like 4.30 pm.I understand they wanna take everyone but why when I try to get my last passenger before I finish up, they stop behind me when I ask the passenger where they go.The passenger usually stop talkin to me and take his cab.Do u thing it is fair?I understand if it happens in the morning but if it is 4.30 every single corner there is passenger.

2-Penn station 7 ave taxi stand, when i am going to into in lane,I see all cabs in front of me droppin passenger. It takes 2 min. and i still wait after him.he has no rush everybody pass us cut over us and Im still waiting. Why you have no respect?

When you said they 'do use off duty light' I think you meant to say they DONT use their off duty light.

The people working doubles have no reason to turn their off duty light on unless they want to take a break. Also, some people start their shift at 4pm.

All drivers know that a cabbie with an off duty light on can refuse a passenger. They wait behind you so that if you refuse to take passenger, they can take passenger.

I don't know about the Penn Station stuff though. I've never tried to pick up over there.

Re: business discussion

It is a normal behavior when passenger choose the on duty taxi over off duty taxi during rush hour and off rush hour, if the off duty taxi does not pick them up, they will loose both taxi. why are you making a big deal out of this? reverse the situation, if you are on duty and someone infront of you is off duty, the passenger is most likely to choose you.

as for penn station, if a passenger came out from the station and see a empty taxi infront of them, they will hop in instead of waiting on the long line especially in bad weather, there are nothing anyone can do except if there are a designated passenger drop off area like the airport. this situation also happen at port authority. this is nyc and everybody is in a rush everyday, the pace here is fast. this have nothing to do with disrepect.  disrespect is when there are a passenger in front of you hailing a taxi and some asshole cut in front of you from the far left or far right lane to get that passenger, this is a disrespect of business and colleage, the cab likes to do that with light blue phone # ending with 7777,

Re: business discussion
Well its simple, the answer for your first question is, passengers have the right to choose. If I am in a rush and I see a cab with its off duty light on and one with its lights off, obviously I will chose the one with his off duty lights off cause he won't refuse to take me where ever i choose to go. As a cab driver my job is to pick up passengers if my off duty light is off. 9 out of 10 times I'm waiting behind a cab with his off duty lights on because I get stuck behind one, I see he is off duty and I see a customer, my initial reaction is to pick up the customer cause most likely the guy with his off duty lights on wont be picking him up, but instead he slams on his brakes to harass the customer where they are going and i get stuck behind cause of traffic.

And the answer to your second question is that MOST cab drivers are hungry, ruthless, disgusting, disrespectful people. I dont know what a yellow cab does to some people, but once they are in one, they become different people. Some of my friends who are the nicest people in the world, become crazy once they get into a cab. But in the end, this is human nature. If someone throws dollar bills in the middle of the street, all your gonna see next is a mass of people fighting for that dollar, they forget about their self respect and respect for others and all they see is that dollar $$. And that is the problem with many cab drivers. They wont be satisfied with making just a 150 dollars after everything, instead they risk their lives, forget about their sanity to make a 170 bucks or 180 bucks. But their are always some cab drivers out there who don't let money take over there mind, and obey the rules and respect one another. Unfortunately those cab drivers are a small minority. If cab drivers wake up and respect one another, then they can be a powerful union. The tlc, the garages wont be able to boss us around and might actually respect us. But all they see us as is a bunch of savages cause many of us are.

Re: business discussion
my friend  bht931, you are so right,I totally understand what do you mean. But there is something wrong here to I would like to tell you.

1-There are so many taxi cabs but there is less passenger. There is no resources to take demands. And now its going to be more by the new tlc thing.Look around and count how many they are. There is a competition but it is not like fair.It sounds like natural life who ever is strong he is alive. There should limit for cabs , I mean it could be by fair.even numbered medallions could be work on even days like 12 March 14 march and odd numbers on odd days.It is an example.

2-Fares.I give you an example,I took a passenger who want to Port authority to 46 and 6 ave. They were 3 people may be friends or family I dont care,I takes my 10 min to there cuz of traffic and the meter says 5 or 6 something like that. They told me far corner please it means it is an express street no turn until park ave.So they pay me 5 bucks for 3 people but waste my 15 min and steal my concentration. If they take subway they pay 2.25x3= $6.75.So there should be different meter system.Crosstown should $1 per min.
The same thing for brooklyn queens also. The same disgusting traffic to bridge or tunnel less money and return back to city empty. There should be regular meter until to bridge and then double meter after it.There are gps system on every car.you should have an option if you make it double meter you could not pick up fare until you come back to city.If you use regular meter you can pick up.It should be optional

3-Hotels.If you gives keep going give money to doorman we could see some topics everyday. Please cut it off and use your friendship with them outside of the business.

4-Police.There should be taxi helper rules in the city.WE are the most important vehicle for city.We deserve some concession. If there is two bus lane on madison, there should be one more lane for taxis.Turning concession for instance.I took a fare in front of grand central.42 and park ave.He wanted to get 39 and 1st ave and it is 4.10pm.What I have to do.Go to make a right turn to 6 ave? or left turn to broadway? there is no u turn or vander bilt turn...One more stupid example.Take passenger. 42 and 10th ave.she wanted to go 41st and broadway and guess what there is no turn on broadway on 42nd.hahah.maybe we go park ave and take 39 to 6 ave and come 41st and left....or what about take chance to get ticket or no..

5-I dont agree passenger have rights to pick up.I drive ford escape and I can tell you people like CV, It may be there are usallt fat and not fit in my car. They raise the hand I stop and they said no I dont like this type of car get out here. And I see in the mirror they take Cv like in couple second. If we can be union they never threat like this. You know what I have this story two days ago in the morning time and guess what, the same guys try to take my cab like 3.50 pm and he dont care its cv or escape, but refuse him.I dont care tlc give me a ticket some people need to know respect what we are doing

Re: business discussion
Just accept the fact that it's a competitive job. Some cabbies feel it's ok to cut lines, some don't. Some will let you in the lane when you signal, some won't. All you can do is figure out the best route from A to B, and how to cause yourself the least amount of stress. Something I do is pull up Google Earth when I get home if I've been somewhere new in the outer boroughs. You get an excellent overview of everything.
